The Squirrelly Biker - Riding Wet

Riding in foul weather conditions requires a durable rain suit to keep the elements away.

Finding an economical rain suit to when riding is not a hard task.

There are literally thousands on the market to choose from.

Needless to say, there are differences even with low price suits.

The plan is to get a rain suit that can be used more than once or twice.

If you are new to riding, the cash outlay for a high-end rain suit may not be in the cards; however, an economical rain suit will work and give you time to shop around.

On a motorcycle, you can’t really think about more than where you are. There’s a freedom that comes with that – from stress, worry, sweating the small stuff.

Why You Should Get A Foul Weather Rain Suit

Weather conditions play a major part when determining enjoyment of a ride. Windy or wet in the mountains is no fun.

Staying dry during a down pour is a worthy goal for a rider. Although lightweight rain gear is easy to store, it is not durable enough to survive several trips.

Knowing that the selected gear provides adequate protection takes a great deal of stress out of the ride. Warm weather rains are not as troublesome as cold rain; however, being water logged is a problem.

The dryer the rider, the safer a rider can be. Getting caught in the rain does not have to be a dampener on enjoyment.

Unless a rider just chose a bad weather day to ride, the sun always peaks out from behind the clouds.

A breathable rain suit will allow the rider to continue riding without the need to peel the rain gear off immediately after the rain, the break may not be long-term.

What to Look for When Buying A Foul Weather Rain Suit

Everyone has different preferences on what is important or not when deciding on a rain suit, but I want to offer my opinion on the most important things a rain suit should have.

The Squirrelly Biker - What to Look for When Buying A Foul Weather Rain Suit

Look for waterproof and breathability

A rain suit should be both waterproof and breathable. The rider should look for comfort whether in cool or warm weather.

Remaining dry and warm is the primary objective when riding in the rain. A soaking wet rider in cool weather does not a happy camper make.

The Flu or even a common cold is not in the best interest of the rider. Beating back the elements with the proper gear is the best option.

Look for durable stitching and heavy duty zippers or velcro

Durability of a rain suit when it come to stitching and zippers determines the life of the suit. Longevity is preferred over convenience.

Seemingly, some of the high contact areas of the suit should be reinforced. Around the knees and elbows in particular.

For example, double zippers allow for added convenience on a trip to the bathroom.

In addition, durable stitching helps to seal the suit from the elements. The less air leakage the suit fights off, the dryer the rider will be. In cool weather, the warmer the suit will keep the rider.

Look for cargo and storage

Cargo and storage are an important factor for a rain suit. Once zipped and bundled up, convenient access to wallet, keys, and other essentials poses a problem.

Therefore, sealable pockets makes carrying items less of a chore. The average rain suit generally fails in this department.

Four pockets may be enough for a novice rider; however, more seasoned rider appear to carry more odds and ends in their pockets.

The lack of pockets on some suits tend to question the quality of the suit. Just saying!

Too few or pocketless rain suits not only look cheap, they generally are. What you gain in savings for a low budget suit, you lose in quality and potential frequent replacement.

WindRider Pro Foul Weather Gear FAQs

Here are some commonly asked questions about rain suit.

Does the suit work good for summer rain when it is hot?

I guess it depends on what you call as hot. When its raining here, heat is something we are looking for, not something to avoid. They are breathable and with the liner will likely be fine in hot weather, especially now that you can get them in red.

Are these insulated?

It is not insulated so you will need to wear thermal clothes underneath.

Is warm enough for cold/winter? How are the size? Usually I wear ‘L’ what do u suggest?

I would say this is NOT warm enough for winter, as it has a mesh lining inside. It is however a excellent wind and rain jacket. Sizes seem to run true in the jackets, but the bibs run a tad long. I’ve very pleased with the jacket and bibs thus far.
